Where did the word Tiffin originate ?

The word tiffin entered the language system at the start of the 19th century. It is associated with the fashion of eating dinner mid-afternoon that was transformed under the influence of Indian climate to having the main meal later in the day that requires a lighter midday meal instead of the heavy evening meal as found in the British system. The word is borrowed from tiffing – the old English dialect or slang for taking a little drink or sip.

In Mumbai, the term Indian tiffin wallah is used for dabba wallah or the army of delivery men of the Indian tiffin boxes where the meal stuffed in the lunch-boxes is cooked at home and it passes through several hands through a complex but sophisticated and efficient system to reach the destined office worker.
