Saunth (noun.) is the Hindi word for dry ginger. Both dried and fresh ginger protects your body but dried ginger has been used in the traditional herbal remedies for thousands of years in Asian, Indian and Arabic medicines because it contains a higher concentration of two active compounds Shogaol and Gingerol. Dry ginger is specifically added to certain popular Indian recipes.
Other than turmeric, it has been used to flavour rice, lentils (dals) and tea ( chai). Tangy chutney is made with saunth and tamarind pulp where tamarind, jaggery and spices like pepper, chilli (Lal Mirch powder), cumin powder (jeera), dry ginger and saunf as added to enhance its medicinal significance and flavors.
