Dhaniya (noun.) Powdered coriander seeds and whole coriander seeds are used in many Indian dishes. Dhaniya is the Hindi translation for coriander. The leaves of coriander plant cilantro are used to garnish foods in Spanish, Mexican, Latin and Indian cuisine. It's a common ingredient in spice rubs, marinades, chillies, sauces, soups and curries and works well with onions, bell peppers(or red chillies (lal mirch powder), tomatoes and potatoes.
The word coriander is used to indicate the seeds (the spice) and not the plant that has a lemony citrusy flavour. Many Indian foods like biriyani, khichdi, curd, buttermilk, sautéed baby potatoes, roasted eggplant, fried okra, chopped carrots, beetroots, cucumber and even the greens may be garnished with cilantro leaves (dhaniya patte) to look delicious.
